Dan Georgakas - Elia Kazan
Kazan’s political activity
|
Question: In your article on Elia Kazan, you state that opinions about Kazan's political activity reflect the critic more than the actual issue itself. What is your opinion about Kazan's decision to name names? Do you think it was selfish or do you believe that it was acceptable because of his (later) distance from the Communist Party? (Tommy Cross)

Kazan's legacy

Question: We discussed in class the critics of Elia Kazan and whether a line should be drawn between what people do in their professional life and their decisions/actions away from the camera. As you have studied Kazan much more than any of us, I am interested in learning your position on the moral question of Kazan's actions with HUAC and what part you think, if any, that should play in his legacy. Kazan’s political thoughts
|
Question: How would you describe the Kazan of Communism and the Kazan that embraced democracy? It seems to me that Kazan took an identity off the shelf. He went with the beliefs and ideas of those by whom he was surrounded. While that may have had a really good influence on his art, to me it really detracts from the true Kazan. Did he ever discover who that really was? (Gerard Farara)
